48 Hours at Hotel A Cala, Conca
Corsica is home to a remarkable collection of privately owned boutique hotels, many of which offer only a handful of rooms. This is often possible because the owners live on the property themselves, opening part of their home to guests. Not only does this create an incredibly personal atmosphere, but it also gives visitors access to genuine local recommendations without spending hours researching before the trip. It's almost a carte blanche for those who enjoy travelling spontaneously, as the owners often know exactly where to secure the best table at a popular restaurant, the finest spot at a beach club or even the most convenient parking for the island's busiest attractions.
The downside, however, is that these hidden gems are not always easy to find. One of them is Hotel A Cala, overlooking the beautiful bay of Favone in the commune of Conca. Favone Beach itself is a peaceful stretch of coastline that can be reached on foot in around ten minutes from the hotel. Located just 30 minutes north of the picturesque town of Porto-Vecchio, Hotel A Cala is perfectly positioned for exploring Corsica's eastern coastline and makes an excellent base for a round trip across the island.
We drove from Bonifacio to Favone, a journey of roughly one hour. With only five suites, Hotel A Cala is an intimate property, so don't expect large entrance signs guiding the way. On Corsica, Google Maps isn't always your most reliable travel companion either. Thankfully, the detailed pre-arrival information provided by the hotel made finding the property surprisingly straightforward.
Even so, nothing quite prepared us for the adventurous final stretch. The steep access road is partly unpaved and requires a little confidence behind the wheel. But once you reach the top of the hill, you quickly realise the drive was well worth it. A beautiful iron gate welcomes arriving guests, opening after you ring the bell and announce your name. Parking is effortless and, within moments of stepping out of the car, we received a wonderfully warm welcome from the owner, Anne.
She immediately introduced us to the property, showing us around the beautifully maintained communal areas before inviting us to take a seat on the terrace. As most of the formalities had already been completed through the online pre-arrival form, there was no need to present passports or credit cards upon arrival—a thoughtful touch that allowed us to relax and enjoy the hotel from the very first moment.
The property itself is spread across two levels. The upper floor houses the reception area, breakfast room, kitchen, terrace and one guest suite, while the lower level is home to four newly built suites as well as a small spa and a well-equipped fitness room. Once we had unloaded our rental car, Anne accompanied us to Suite Three, our home for the next few nights.
Four of the hotel's five suites share the same elegant design, while Suite Five occupies the owners' former residence and offers a little more space. What makes Hotel A Cala truly unique is that every single suite comes with its own private pool, making it the only hotel in Corsica to offer this exceptional feature. While private pools have become almost standard at many luxury resorts in Greece, they remain a genuine rarity in France. Unsurprisingly, we made the most of ours and happily spent an entire day without leaving the suite.
The outdoor terrace features a generous double daybed alongside a cosy seating area, making it the perfect place to enjoy a glass of Corsican wine beneath the island's spectacular star-filled sky after dinner.
Inside, the suite is both stylish and comfortable. Two inviting armchairs, a writing desk with a coffee machine, a comfortable double bed dressed with plush pillows and soft blankets, as well as a walk-in wardrobe with minibar create everything needed for a relaxing stay. Coffee and bottled water are complimentary, while additional beverages are available at extra cost.
The bathroom is spacious and flooded with natural daylight, featuring a large walk-in shower, a single vanity and a toilet. My only minor criticism would be the lack of a proper door separating the bedroom from the bathroom, which would have added a little more privacy. That said, after long days exploring Corsica's beautiful beaches, it was always a pleasure to return and enjoy a refreshing shower using the wonderfully scented toiletries by the local Corsican brand Isula.
With only five suites, there is naturally no need for a full-service restaurant. Instead, owners Anne and Jean-Baptiste offer beautifully prepared charcuterie and cheese platters upon request, making for the perfect light dinner after a day of exploring Corsica. Every product is sourced locally, showcasing some of the island's finest producers. Their carefully curated wine list follows the same philosophy, featuring exclusively Corsican wines from some of the region's most renowned wineries. So, if you arrive late in the afternoon or simply didn't have time to stop at a supermarket along the way, there is no need to worry—they have everything you need for a relaxed evening.
After a wonderfully restful night's sleep, we looked forward to breakfast, which was served in the bright breakfast room overlooking the surrounding landscape. Guests can choose from a generous buffet of carefully selected Corsican products, while eggs are freshly prepared to order. The selection exceeded our expectations. Considering that only one other couple was staying at the hotel during our visit, the buffet was remarkably extensive and featured products of exceptional quality.
The undisputed highlight, however, were the croissants and pain au chocolat. Every morning, Jean-Baptiste personally collects them from his favourite local bakery, and I can honestly say they were among the best pastries I have ever tasted. They would not have felt out of place at some of Paris' finest luxury hotels. Freshly prepared egg dishes and coffee completed the experience, with Nespresso providing a consistently excellent cup to start the day.
Housekeeping was carried out daily and maintained the suite to an impeccable standard. Separate pool towels were provided in addition to the regular bath towels, a thoughtful detail that made spending time by our private pool even more convenient.
One of the aspects that truly sets Hotel A Cala apart is the exceptionally personal service. With only five suites, the atmosphere feels far more like staying in a beautiful private villa than in a traditional boutique hotel. Anne and Jean-Baptiste have mastered the balance between being genuinely attentive and allowing guests complete privacy. They are always happy to recommend hidden beaches, scenic drives or outstanding local restaurants, yet they never feel intrusive. Instead, their passion for hospitality shines through in countless small gestures that make every guest feel sincerely welcome.
The intimate size of the property also creates an atmosphere that has become increasingly rare. There are no crowded breakfast buffets, no competition for the best sun loungers and no queues anywhere on the property. Every day unfolds at your own pace. Whether relaxing beside your private pool, enjoying a glass of Corsican wine on the terrace or returning after a day spent exploring the island, Hotel A Cala offers a wonderful sense of tranquillity. It is the kind of place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to fully embrace the relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle.
Of course, it would be a shame not to explore the spectacular coastline surrounding the hotel. From completely untouched beaches to elegant beach clubs, Corsica offers an incredible variety of seaside experiences. One of my personal favourites is Cala Rossa near Lecci, around twenty minutes south of Hotel A Cala. Equally beautiful are Pinarello Beach and Plage de Saint-Cyprien, both famous for their crystal-clear turquoise waters and soft sandy shores.
Although the hotel itself is not located directly on the beach, we actually considered this one of its greatest advantages. Rather than being tied to a single stretch of coastline, every day offers the opportunity to discover a different beach before returning to the peace and privacy of your own suite. I would highly recommend renting a car, as Corsica is an island that is best explored at your own pace. Hotel A Cala provides the perfect base for discovering the eastern coastline, while Anne and Jean-Baptiste are always delighted to share their favourite recommendations for the surrounding area.
Once again, I found myself falling in love with Corsica. The island remains wonderfully authentic, rich in history and surprisingly easy to explore thanks to its excellent road network. Add outstanding local cuisine, breathtaking beaches and genuine hospitality, and it is easy to understand why Corsica remains one of the Mediterranean's most rewarding destinations.
Hotel A Cala may not offer the extensive facilities of a large luxury resort, but that is precisely where its charm lies. Instead of endless restaurants, oversized spas or busy public areas, it focuses on what truly matters: beautifully designed suites, complete privacy, warm and authentic hospitality, and an intimate atmosphere that is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Whether travelling as a couple or with friends, Hotel A Cala is one of those rare places that quietly exceeds expectations and leaves you wishing you had stayed just a little longer.
