Restaurant-Check: DO & CO Bistro, Munich

It’s no secret that I am a fan of Do&Co gastronomic outlets – might it be Austrian Airlines’ excellent business class food, my favourite restaurant in Vienna which sits atop Do&Co Hotel Vienna or the brand new Do&Co Hotel in Munich which we reviewed last year. I think catering food is always hard to deliver and Do&Co does an incredibly good job. It’s also a safe option when you are just in the mood for something chic with international and mixed cuisine. While their location in Vienna is hard to beat, the designers behind the company really created a gem in Munich recently. As soon as one enters the lobby, the decent light transports you to a dazzling atmosphere and you don’t feel like you fell into a tourist trap – even though you are just across Marienplatz and in front of the Frauenkirche.

This time, I was not here to see their rooms or stunning first-floor fine dining restaurant. Indeed Do&Co recently launched their new bistro. Compared to the first-floor dining room, the bistro is a more informal and casual option. This is also why it is open from 7 am till 1 am – so basically serving each hour of the day. No matter if you stop by for eggs benedict to start off the day, a glass of bubbles in between shopping, or a sumptuous dinner with your loved one. The menu reads clearly and the service soon introduces the concept, to better understand the journey. I loved the diverse choice of dishes, from classic Austrian dishes, and middle-eastern influenced courses to Asian-inspired delicacies – there’s something for every taste.

We started the evening with focaccia and olive oil along with pimientos de Padron as well as Jamon Iberico which was served with Manchego cheese. Honestly, we were a bit overwhelmed by the concept which is the reason why courses kept coming and we didn’t really follow the correct order. So afterwards we had the Mediterranean tuna sashimi with their famous popcorn shrimp that came with a salad that had fresh truffles shoved over it – actually this was as decadent as it can get and we really loved these two dishes. Before we could even come over the wow effect, we were offered tataki from dry-aged rib eye with truffle mayo and green asparagus. Oh my gosh – this dish is a must-try! As main courses we had the grilled dry aged rib eye with chimichurri and the oven-braised baby carrots with honey-balsamic glace, lemon-labneh and coriander – what a treat!

Even though we were already very full, we were recommended to try Do&Co's two signature desserts: Do&Co’s Mousse au Chocolat with fresh strawberries and plum dumplings served with butter crumbs. Needless to say that we were in Austrian food heaven and I haven’t ever eaten a better dessert outside of Austria before. The service was extremely attentive and super welcoming. We took a bottle of Austrian chardonnay that was recommended by our server and honestly our expectations were way exceeded. In general we expected a solid casual restaurant in the heart of Munich but in the end it was one of the best gastronomic evenings we have had for a long time. There was plenty of service interaction with the guests and the interior design really is perfect. Overall I can highly recommend this new food heaven in the heart of Munich.
